Located right at the bottom of the North Island, Wellington city is New Zealand’s capitol. Far from being a boring political city, Wellington is also the uncrowned culture capitol with many bars playing live music, theatres, orchestras and the museum of New Zealand, Te Papa. This museum is renowned for portraying and exhibiting many uniquely New Zealand icons. Cars made from corrugated iron, old radio programmes, historic sports victories. It enough to make a Kiwi proud.
Probably not reminiscent of many European capitols, Wellingtons way of doing culture is often based around the weird and the wonderful, though you can find a good friend of ours playing first violin for the symphony orchestra. Look for the man with all the red curly hair! The city itself with its wooden terraced houses and steep hills, surrounded by its natural harbour, makes for a unique site for those more used to houses made of bricks.
Wellington is also the arrival and departure point for the ferries crossing between the South and North Islands.
