Located on the central western side of the North Island lies Taranaki which takes its name from the huge conical volcano that stands over the region. Similar to Mount Fujiyama in Japan, Taranaki is, according to Maori legend, Mount Ruapehu’s estranged husband. The coast around Mt Taranaki is famous for its surfing and long left hand break. Inland, national parks with ancient forests, rugged landscapes and large rivers offer many great walking tracks.
Taranaki seldom features on first time visitors travel plans. This is a shame as the areas are quiet, beautiful and great for those looking to relax in natural surroundings. Perfect for those on a return visit!
