Northland is dominated by two natural phenomenon: lush sub-tropical vegetation with ferns and colossal Kauri trees- and beautiful, easily explored coasts, inlets and bays. The quiet and easygoing way of life on the west coast with its rough and rugged landscapes, unexplored beaches and few people contrasts with the east and its soft sand beaches and seaside settlements. Northland is also rich in Maori tradition and culture and it was here that legend says the first Maoris arrived in the Hokianga.
New Zealand’s most northern point, Cape Reinga, is according to Maori legend the tail of Maui’s great fish- Te Hiku o te Ika a Maui. Maori also say that this where the spirits of the dead depart New Zealand on their return to their homeland- Hawaiiki-A-Nui.
A week or more in Northland is great for those wanting to enjoy sea, surf, warm weather and an easygoing way of life. Fish and Chips at the Mangonui fish shop is a must!
