Abel Tasman

The city of Nelson is a quaint seaside settlement that grew into city. Full of local artists, colonial houses and waterfront cafes, cities don’t get much more relaxed than this. And, with the glistening sea and expansive vistas, it is fairly beautiful too.

This areas most well known natural asset has to be Abel Tasman National Park. Running along the northern coast, this area is great for walking, kayaking, snorkelling and swimming. Kayaking along the coast for a day or more is a relaxing way to experience this area up close. You may even have dolphins for company. Golden Bay is also home to Te Waikoropupu Springs, an incredibly clear spring, but a little chilly too. It is also possible to visit Farewell Spit on the far north-west corner of the South Island, a massive sandbank that whips out into the Cook Straight.

Not to be forgotten is the Nelson Lakes district. Beautiful lakes and rivers full of big brown trout surrounded by pristine native forests teaming with birds and insects. A word of advice though, don’t forget mosquito repellent in the summer months.

For those feeling very active, the 5 day Heaphy Track is a walk through the Kahurangi National Park. And for those wanting to get away from Nelsons fine weather, the park is also home to some of the world’s largest caves that can be explored by those with the necessary experience.
