This is the large fistful of land on the North Island’s eastern corner. While this area is first place in the world to see the sun each morning, it is one of the last places that most visitors ever go to. The coast road around East Cape to Gisborne is stunning with little traffic and a good many secluded spots to swim, rest and relax. Great for campervaners.
The Urewera national park west of Gisborne is an untouched ancient forest with awe inspiring views, hikes and walks and absolute silence. Accessed only by a 105km gravel road, this forms a natural barrier to the less adventurous but offers those with perseverance something very worthwhile.
Linking Eastland up with the ancient Te Urewera forest and national park is time very well spent. OK its remote, yes its rugged, and no there is not much in the way of nightlife. But this, and the stunning scenery, makes it so great.
