Coromandel

This is the large mountainous and bush clad peninsula across the water directly east of Auckland. You can drive to the Coromandel through the northern Waikato or from the Bay of Plenty. Despite the fact that the Coromandel is only a short drive from Auckland, it is lightly populated and rather quaint.

The coastline is stunning with glistening seas, white sand beaches and Pohutukawa trees lining the many bays and points. Wangamata, or Wanga as the locals call it, has a rather nice sand bar that is good for a surf, and all along the coast there are great places for a refreshing swim in the clear Pacific Ocean. For those who would rather bath than swim then Hot Water Beach is a rather unique place where you can dig a hole in the sand and lie back and soak in warm water.

The mountainous interior of the Coromandel is covered in ferns, kauri trees and singing native birds. For those who like walking, then the paths afford great views where you can see 360 degrees from the some of ridges.

Coromandel township is cute and quaint, full of local artists wares as well as a fine selection of locally made jams. There’s a great pub with a big tree growing in the middle of the terrace that serves a fine cold beer on a very hot day.

Covered in bush walks through mountains and along coasts, quaint seaside settlements and stunning sandy beaches, the Coromandel is a place to unwind and relax.
