Mostly known for the city of Rotorua and its boiling mud and geysers, we think there is much more to this region than one city. The long sweeping coastline along the northern edge between the Coromandel and East Cape offers ocean beaches that often have no one on them. Offshore you can experience dolphin watching and swimming and great open sea fishing. Further out is volcanic White Island, which can be visited by boat or helicopter.
Rotorua itself is surrounded by many small and beautiful lakes and these lesser known places allow you to experience the volcanic activity the region is so well known for but in a much more remote and natural way. Waterfalls flowing with thermal water, hot pools you can only access by small boat, ancient native forests. The lakes and rivers also afford great trout fishing and short walks. These secluded secrets cast new light onto an area that is otherwise a bit too busy for many.
