Surrounded by the sea Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city. The Hauraki Gulf on the eastern coast is home to many beautiful islands and all around the city white and black sand beaches make for great swimming and surfing. In the middle of the Hauraki Gulf, Rangitoto is an island volcano that can be seen from all around the city and is one of the city’s natural icons. A walk to the top is most rewarding and offers spectacular 360 degree views. The name Rangitoto is derived from the phrase "Te Rangi i totongia a Tamatekapua" - the day the blood of Tamatekapua was shed.
Great Barrier Island is an untouched bush clad paradise and on Waiheke island you relax and taste many of New Zealand best Bordeaux stle red wine such as Goldwater and Stonyridge Larose. Aside from its coastline, Auckland is also home to the bush and forest clad Waitakere and Hunua Ranges which offer great walks and tramping.
The Skytower located in the city centre offers impressive 360 degree views and lunch or dinner in the restaurant at the top is a great way to see the whole city while enjoying a very good meal.
Often overlooked by those rushing into the wilderness, Auckland with its beautiful harbours and mountains, cafes and restaurants, vibrant beach culture and nightlife makes for a city worthy of a few days stay.
